Hello, we are Flying Fox, Roaming Rabbit and Orbiting Owl.

We are part of the year 2 Literacy project to encourage children to write for fun.

We come with our own bag and special notebook.

The children enjoy taking us home to write dairy entries, news, poems and stories in the notebooks, to share with the rest of the class.

In the Autumn Term we learn about another locality in Kenya, Africa called Kaptalamwa. We learn about what it would be like to live there in comparison to living in St John’s. In Literacy we read African traditional stories and enjoy acting out these out in our role play areas and assemblies.  This is a picture of one of the role play areas.

We use our ICT skills to find out information about African animals and use this knowledge to create dances in our P.E. sessions.  This topic also influences our art, and one project the children particularly enjoy is making African beads from clay.  The African songs and dances we learn are used to entertain the audience at the Harvest Festival.

In the Spring Term our topic is ‘The Sea’.  In History we learn about the Battle of Trafalgar and Nelson.  This includes a very interesting and enjoyable trip to the HMS Victory at Portsmouth.  The Year Two classes are transformed into the decks of a ship and the children and staff dress up for the day as the crew of the ‘HMS Oaktree’ – this is our ‘All Aboard Day’.  As part of the activities aboard the ‘ship’, we use our number skills to play maths games.  Using our D.T. skills we make model toy cannons, learning more about wheels and axles to make them move.

In Year Two we learn about Christianity and Islam in our R.E. lessons over the year.  In the Spring term we visit the Shah Jahan Mosque in Woking

In the Autumn and Summer terms we visit our local church.

In the Summer Term our topic is ‘Living Things’ and this science focus includes learning about plants and animals in our local environment and this is continued over the year throughout the seasons.  We also visit Nower Wood where we use our investigation skills to hunt for minibeasts both in woodland and water habitats.

We hope this has given you a flavour of life in Year Two, where we remember the Oaktree Way to

CARE FOR EVERYBODY AND EVERYTHING.
