Here are some of the learning areas we enjoy in Year R.
| Each class has a sand and water area. | An art area. |
| A role play area. | A book corner. |
| An ICT area… | …and interactive whiteboard. |
| A writing corner. |
A science investigation table. |
|
Outdoors we have a large well resourced area that reflects the learning inside the classroom. We use this in all weathers throughout the year.
|
Our Learning Our curriculum covers the six areas of learning stated in the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage. These are Personal and social Development, Problem Solving Reasoning and Numeracy, Communication Language and Literacy, Creative, Physical and Knowledge and Understanding of the World. Our emphasis is on small group work with some whole class learning sessions. Assessment is ongoing through observation, indoors and outdoors and also during teaching sessions. There is provision for children with special needs and this may involve some individual teaching work.
|
Each class has a Choosing Board. When the children are not working with an adult we encourage their independent learning through their own choice of activities.
|
The curriculum is taught through topics.
Autumn Term 1 – All About Me The children’s work is centred on themselves and what they can do. We celebrate Harvest Festival and parents and friends enjoy Plant a Bulb Day and Wellie Walk
Autumn Term 2 – Family and Friends We talk about our families and friendships. At the end of term we celebrate Christmas with our Christmas Concert, our visit to the church for a family service, a trip to a local pantomime and class parties.
Spring Term 1 – People Who Help Us Visitors, such as the Postman tell us about their work and the children learn to ask questions and find out information from non-fiction books and computers. We cover History when a grandparent tells us what life was like as a child.
Spring Term 2 – Out and About This term we focus on Geography when we explore our school and local environment, talking about their features. At the end of term we invite our grandparents into school to our grandparents’ festival.
Summer Term 1 – Plants and Minibeasts We take a closer look at the plants we have been growing all year in our vegetable garden and look at minibeasts in their homes. We also take a look at St John’s Church.
Summer Term 2 – Farm Animals and Pets We enjoy a visit to a farm, looking closely at the features of the animals. Later on in the term the children bring their own pets into school for us to hold and find out more about from books and computers. We finish off the year with the Oaktree Games followed by a picnic with family and friends.
Ways to Help your Child Before Starting School v Teach your child to dress/undress as independently as possible v Teach them to use the toilet and wash and dry hands independently v Encourage your child to try as many fruits and vegetables as possible in preparation for snack time in the classroom v Teach them how to recognise their name and label every piece of clothing, including shoes and socks v Encourage a love of books by reading regularly to your child and visiting the library
We look forward to you visiting our friendly, happy school.
