The Oaktree School Press release – 6th October 2008
It’s Official – The Oaktree is an Outstanding School!
Inspectors have found The Oaktree School to be ‘outstanding’ – the highest possible grade that Ofsted can award.
Three years after a very encouraging inspection which judged it good in all areas, the popular community infant school in St John’s is celebrating outstanding status for the first time under the “committed and visionary leadership” of its headteacher, Glen Alder, who is ‘extremely well supported’ by her staff and governing body.
According to Ofsted, children at the Oaktree enjoy an excellent curriculum which provides them with exciting and innovative learning opportunities and the children make excellent progress throughout the school from the day they arrive in the reception classes. Pupils can also benefit from ‘very high quality’ before and after school provision.
The Oaktree also received the highest grade for how well children with learning difficulties and disabilities make progress.
The inspectors have written to the school’s children, praising them for being interesting to talk to, extremely polite and helpful. They added that they were very impressed with the way that the children were using the ‘extremely attractive’ open-plan Acorn Centre and Lilley, the recently arrived Bus, which is equipped for the pupils to carry out scientific investigations.
The children were also praised for having responsibilities towards the world, eating the right things and staying fit and healthy. The Oaktree has gained Basic Skills, Healthy Schools, Activemark, Eco Schools, Fair trade and Investor in People awards.
The inspectors found that the school has outstanding links with parents and the community, which contributed to the ‘extremely high level of care’ provided by it. Their report concluded that “pupils are extremely well prepared for their future life and learning”.
The Oaktree’s headteacher, Mrs Glen Alder, said: “This is wonderful news for everyone involved with The Oaktree. We are delighted that Ofsted agreed with our own evaluation that The Oaktree School is an Outstanding school. Our success is all due to the dedication of our very hardworking staff and governors and the support of parents. Above all, I am delighted that the Inspectors have recognised that the children should be proud of the contribution that they make to the school. We are certainly very proud of them!”
Mike Woods, chair of the governing body, said: “The Ofsted findings are the culmination of three years’ hard work and improvement under the inspired leadership of Glen Alder and her team. It was very encouraging to hear all of the positive things that the parents said to the inspectors about The Oaktree and we owe it to them and the children not to rest on our laurels and to strive to become an even better school.”
