Swine Flu

Although we have no confirmed cases of Swine Flu in school we have a few members of our school community with summer colds. We are reminding the children of our little rhyme and good hygiene rules. Will you please remind your children too.

The messages are simple:

Catch it - germs spread easily. Always carry tissues and use them to catch your cough or sneeze Bin it - germs can live for several hours on tissues. Dispose of your tissue as soon as possible. Kill it - hands can transfer germs to every surface you touch. Clean your hands as soon as you can.

If your child demonstrates the following—a fever; cough and/or shortness of breath; aching muscles, sore throat; runny nose, sneezing; loss of appetite; headache; malaise (lethargy, listlessness); chills—the current advice is: KEEP THEM AT HOME—sending them to school would risk their infecting others. Ideally they should keep their contact with others to a minimum until 7 days from the onset of their symptoms. If:

You are concerned about the state of their health Your child is more ill than you would normally expect with flu

Anybody in the household is in an 'at risk' group. Please contact your GP, who may consider advising antiviral treatment. Otherwise treat as you normally would e.g. with paracetamol etc. If you wish for more information visit the following web site. WWW.hpa.org.uk

She's a WINNER

Lilly Scoops the Top Prize

We were delighted last night to be awarded 1st place in the P&G Community Matters competition. It was awarded to the school for Lilly the Learning Bus because it was felt that we had made an outstanding contribution to the community. The £3,000 will enable us to equip the inside of the bus to make an exciting learning environment for our children.

A huge thank you to everyone who voted for us without your support Lilly would not have won.

A special thank you must go to Kevin Gill who thought up the idea of the Learning Bus. He then found the right bus, persuaded firms to pay for the bus, organised parents to clean and paint the bus with paint that he had persuaded Hammerite to give to us.

So many parents have given donations to pay for the bus, helped to clean the bus and paint it, provided unwanted items and even new items such as batteries and it has really made a difference.

It was then realised that power was needed for the bus and 5-a-side Football Competitions and the Night Adventure raised a combined £1,400 to buy a wind turbine. Parents took part in the competitions and lots of parents collected sponsorship money. We now have a working wind turbine due to parents' generous contributions. We were delighted to see it moving this week for the first time.

Kevin Gill entered us into the P&G Community Matters competition and his amazing application won us a place in the final four. Now with your help voting for us we have won this amazing amount of money. Parent, Staff and governor action and support have enable us to achieve this very positive result.

THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE. It is due to your support that we can really make a difference to children's learning.

Helpers' Celebration

Everyone who has helped in school this year is invited to the Helper's Celebration on Monday 20th July at 9.00 am. The event will be finished at 9.30 am. THANK YOU

Books for Schools Vouchers

Please send in any Books for Schools vouchers from The Times and The Times on Sunday by Tuesday 14th July as we will be placing an order shortly. Thank You

Year 1

This week in Year 1 we have been measuring time. We can all estimate roughly how long a minute lasts and have got better at guessing how many jumps, hops skips etc that we can do in a minute.

We have also been imagining life on the ocean wave and writing poetry using our senses to set the scene.

Next week is Sports Day and your children will know which colour their team is. Please can you send your child in to school wearing a t-shirt of the right colour on Thursday 16th as well as their shorts and trainers (Friday if Thursday is wet!) The children will stay in their sports clothes all day. Please come and join us if you can!

Homework Challenge

Next week, weather permitting, it will be sports day -

The Oaktree Games!

Please help your child to find a picture of a famous

sports man or woman and three interesting facts about

them.

Thank you all for your help - and don't forget to come in on 20th July so we can say thank you in person to all our special helpers!

Feeling Good Week 6th-10th July

We certainly felt good and relaxed this week! Year R enjoyed listening to relaxing music.

Year 1 have enjoyed learning the art of Tai chi in their regular morning 'wake up work out' sessions.

Year 2 converted their classes into health farms and enjoyed making fruit salad in their health food shops.

St John's Knaphill Sure Start Children's Centre News

Our activities will be running as usual until 22nd July. During the summer we will have some of the regular sessions and other 'one-offs'. New families are welcome to attend any of these although some will require booking. Please contact Charlotte on 01483 476450 or childrenscentre@st-iohns-village.surrey.sch.uk for details.

Year 2

What a super week, we certainly all feel really good after such a week of fun. Thank you to all the parents who helped on our park visit. The children really seemed to enjoy themselves.

We have just started practising for our Leavers Assembly. The children will be bringing home costume letters in the next few days letting you know what they will be wearing. It promises to be a lot of fun.

Well done to all the children who completed the Homework challenge. The winner will be announced next week, when the teachers have finished counting!!

Please do also check that your child's clothes are clearly named as it is very easy for them to become lost on a hot day when everyone takes their jumpers off.

The Year Two Team. Homework Challenge

Try to do one thing to make everyone in your family feel good this week.

Reception

cooling down with a refreshing ice-lolly.

RSPCA Biscuit Sale

As you are aware we have been finding out about the RSPCA and are making biscuits to sell on Wednesday 15th July 2009, to support them in the work they do. Biscuits will be available to buy in each reception classroom, after school.

Homework challenge

Practise writing these key words from memory: is, this, look. The children are learning to measure lengths of objects and comparing different heights, please practise this at home.

Thank you Year R Team

Cards

We have packed up a good selection of cards into bags of 10. We have ensured that the cards are perfect and suitable. This is very good value for money.

We would be grateful if you could try and sell a few packs to family and fiends. This would help towards our fundraising efforts. We make 100% on any sales.

We will leave the cards outside the Eco Lobby each day so please have a look.

The Oaktree and Hermitage Schools Prayer Meeting

Please join us for prayer and cake on Monday 13th July at 8pm.

Please contact Hannah (07722 422519) or Clare (07737 490085) for more details.

Date for you diary- our next meeting is Friday16th October at 8pm.

Lost Property

PLEASE, PLEASE check the lost property. We have lots. We will always return lost property if the child's name is in it.

PARENT GOVERNOR

Early next term we will be advertising for a Parent Governor.

We thought that we would give parents lots of warning so that they can think over the summer if they would like to take up the role.

Jump Off

On Friday 17th July we are presenting a cheque to the British Heart Foundation for the sponsor money raised from the Jump Off.

Thank you to all who have sent in their sponsor money. Can all sponsor money be sent to school by Thursday 16th July.

Thank You

SPORTS DAY - Thursday 16th July

Sports day starts at 9.30 am. We have the event at this time to ensure that the children are not out in the sun at the hottest time of the day (we hope the sun will shine). Please ensure that your child has a sun hat, a named bottle of water and is liberally coated with sun cream if the weather is hot.

There are three parts to the event. In the first part the children undertake short competitive games in teams. Every time a game is played the winning team scores 1 point. The teams are organised to ensure fairness for all. When the children have completed all the games the scores are counted. Please can you contact your Link Parent to offer to help for 10 minutes when the children are undertaking this part of the morning to enable all parents to watch their children for most of the time

The children then move to the running track. The children will sit at the far side of the track and we ask parents to stand on the side of the track nearest to the school. The children run in their class groups and the 1st, 2nd, 3rd scores are added to the first event scores. The children travel very fast through the finish line and to prevent accidents no one is allowed to stand in front of the orange netting. At the end of this event the scores are given and the cup presented to the winning team.

The children are then free to enjoy a picnic with family or friends. We think that the games will finish at roughly 11.15 am. We will then be having a picnic on the field. If you are unable to be at school for the picnic please can you complete the attached slip showing either; if you have arranged for your child to picnic with someone else or if they need to stay with their teacher.

All children will need a packed lunch.

The picnic will finish at 12.05 pm and children will return to their classrooms.
