Gardening for Life 2009 survey - chance to win £100 worth of prizes

In keeping with our ECO policy, The Oaktree School would like to support Woking LA21 in their annual garden survey. In addition, you have a chance to win £100 worth of prizes.

The short survey asks for information about your garden and the wildlife you have seen in the last year and a wildlife survey for April 2009. The forms are available from local libraries or from the website: http://sites.google.com/site/wokingla21/Home/gardening-for-life

We hope you have run completing this survey with the help of your children.

SNAG (School Nutrition Action Group)

As you are aware we promote healthy eating at The Oaktree School. We are in the process of setting up a SNAG group, which will include children, staff and parents.

If you are interested in supporting the school with this initiative and feel that you could offer your time and advice please contact Mrs Afzal or the School Office. We anticipate having one meeting each half term.

WALKING BUS

We will be starting the Walking Bus again at the beginning of the Summer Term.

So what is a walking bus? A group of children meet at a set point and walk to school together. Parents are expected to walk with the bus once a week. This enables children to undertake a healthy, pleasant walk with their friends and parents to avoid the madness of parking near the school.

Last year the Walking Bus started from St Johns' Lye and was popular. We are considering where the Walking Bus should start this year and we would like your help. Please can you indicate on the form overleaf if you are interested in your child walking with the Walking Bus and if so where do you think would be a good place to start.

When we have all the expressions of interest we will notify everyone who has shown an interest on the proposed start point.

If you are interested in helping to organise the Walking Bus we do have a small grant to offer payment for services.

World Book Day - Thursday 5th March

Next Thursday each year group will be celebrating World Book Day in their own special way. Year R will be dressing up as book characters, Year 1 are making hats to represent their chosen character, and Year 2 are writing their own adventure world books.

Today your child will be bringing home a £1 book voucher which can be used next week at the Book Fair or in your nearest book shop.

Why do you like books? Fill in questionnaire on back of newsletter and win National Book Tokens.

RED NOSE DAY

As I am sure you are all aware Red Nose Day this year is 13th March and the theme is 'Do Something Funny for Money'. Please could the children bring a donation and come into school wearing something red. If you've got it and it is red, then why not wear as much as you can to look as funny as possible.

Year 1

The children have come back to school refreshed and ready to learn after a week's holiday.

Our literacy work this week has focused on 2 spelling rules; magic "e" and -ing as well as the usual reading activities.

We have been "Smartie-pants" in maths - counting them to see if Mrs Palmer was right when she said that Smartie tubes have more red ones than brown ones. To see if she was right we had to sort and count them. Then we made block graphs and looked to compare the colours. Sometimes she was right...and sometimes she wasn't!

Next week we will be sharing books and responding to them.

HOMEWORK CHALLENGE

For their HOMEWORK CHALLENGE could your child bring in their favourite story (named!) to share in school (not anything too precious in case it gets damaged or lost).

On World Book Day, Thursday 5th March, we will be thinking about our favourite book character and making a hat to represent them. You could help your child to start to think about a character and what they could make to put on a hat.

Thank You

Year 2

Well done to all the children who completed their homework challenge this week. It really helped those children with the start of our Science electricity topic. The children are already involved in this and are asking lots of questions. Some of the children have been given written Literacy homework this week. If this is your child please help them to complete their task. It is really valuable in your child's learning.

In Literacy we are learning how to make our story writing more interesting. We are using a computer program and music attached to really help us describe the setting and mood.

In Numeracy our topic is shape and lines of symmetry. We have had some really exciting days learning about this and have been painting, making and working on the computer to help us in this area. The children have enjoyed naming all the shapes. An interesting fact ? (just in case you get this question in Trivial Pursuit.) Did you know a 100,000 sided shape is called a decemyriagon. Ask your child to tell you more!

Eagle Spelling group and parents of Eagle group: Thank you very much to all those children who have worked so hard to learn so many spellings. A few of the words on this weeks test were from a future spelling list so well done to all of you who got those correct! Miss Hogg

Next week promises to be very exciting. To link to World Book Day on Thursday, the children will be making their own adventure world books. They will be researching different countries, practising their dances and learning about art in different places and cultures. There is a really exciting drama session planned where the children will find a special box with objects from around the world. They will also be learning to create music from different countries and cultures.

Please, please, please do come and see our display on how to be a sailor in the Entrance Hall. The children have all made their own information booklets which can be found in their own class's treasure chest. They really are interesting!

Helpers are always welcome in Year Two. Please see your child's teacher if you are able to help. Thank you for your support. The Year Two Team.

Help from you

In our literacy work next week, we shall be talking about story characters and making up stories. Thursday is World Book Day and on Friday we would like the children to come dressed as characters from stories e.g. a princess, Superman, Spiderman, Goldilocks. Little Red Riding Hood, a bear, a cat, a spotty dog, a rabbit, a soldier, a frog etc... Please do not go to any expense hiring any costumes; simple, home-made costumes are always best! You may already have a costume in your dressing up box at home or left over from our Christmas Concert.

We also need items sent into school that the children consider to be precious. These could be photographs, postcards, nature objects collected from the seaside or countryside that remind them of a lovely day out, a baby toy and so on. Please name the item but do not send in anything too precious that you would be heartbroken about losing. We shall be expecting all the children to be picking up the items and looking at them.

We need volunteers to dig a flower bed alongside our vegetable garden. Please see Mrs Afzal if you can help. Squirrel Class would appreciate some boxes for junk modelling.

Now we have updated our assessments, please check for new targets in the back of your child's home diary.
