The Really Good School DinnerAll
children have been learning about The Really good School Dinner event in their
PSHE lessons. The children learnt a lot about schools in Africa and the life
of the school children of Africa. They found out that sometimes children in
Africa only receive one meal a day which they receive at school. In the
world's poorest countries parents usually only send their children to school
if they know they'll get a meal at lunchtime. So if you take part, they'll get
an education too.
The school is taking part in The Really Good School Dinner event which is
about all of us doing something really good to help children in much poorer
countries. This week we are asking every child to bring in 10p and that money
will go directly towards a school meal for a child in a country like Kenya,
Malawi or Bangladesh.
The money raised will by used by the World Food Programme's school feeding
programme to provide pupils with a nutritious meal, for many their own meal of
the day.

Night Adventure
TONIGHT 5.30pm—7.00pm
Don't forget to come to the Night Adventure tonight. If you
don't have a ticket just come along and buy one on the gate.
ALL ABOARD DAY written in parts by
Francesco, Rian, Jemma, Holly and HannahFirst we lined up in the Hall in
long lines. We felt Happy. The teachers called out our names. When we were in
our Mess groups we went to the classrooms which had been changed into the HAAS
Oaktree.
Next we walked the plank to get on the ship. We went to do our activities.
It was great when the teachers put on their sailor hats and became captains. I
felt really shy.
After that we played cards with Ellie and William and another boy. I like
it because it was boys against girls and the girls won. We also had to tie
rope to rings. I felt happy because I learnt new ways to tie knots. /All of
that was great and we designed a tattoo. I felt happy because I had a clever
idea.
It wasn't long before we went into the hall and we got into groups for the
dance. I felt quite excited as I got to go first. The teacher put the music on
and everyone got a go at dancing. I felt excited because it was fun although I
don't like dancing.
Finally we all came back into the HAAS Oak-tree and loaded the cannons and
got into our positions. We were very excited about the battle. Suddenly the
war started. The captain ordered the seaman to load the cannon and climb the
rigging. We just about won the war. All the seaman cheered, jumped and ran.
Great Britain was very happy.

Year 1This week we have been
learning about Moses and writing wonderful stories about how he was saved from
the Egyptian king by being put in a basket in a river. We have been getting
better at putting in punctuation - including speech marks!
In maths as we have been exploring weight we have been making chocolate
Rice Krispie cakes - we had to measure the ingredients carefully so that our
cakes tasted good!
Next week we are focusing on sculpture - looking at examples from around
the world as well as making our own sculptures out of clay, wire and paper.
(If you have any old newspapers they would be really useful, as would
flattened cereal boxes and cardboard boxes!)
Homework challenge:
If you have the opportunity, please take your child to the Light Box - they
currently have a great sculpture exhibition which would be a really useful
experience for the children ahead of next week's discussions.
As mentioned in previous newsletters, we cannot stress how helpful it
would be if each child had their own art apron. Throughout the entire year
group we have only 10 aprons brought from home and the work we will be doing
in coming weeks involving clay, PVA glue and paint could result in a lot of
washing! An old shirt or large adult t-shirt would be fine...

Year 2Well Ail-Aboard Day was great and
enjoyed by all. A special thank you to all the parents who helped us to
transform the classrooms. It was hard work but worth it! The children have
been writing recounts of the day which you will be able to read when you visit
the class on Parents evening. On the front of this Newsletter you will find
one recount written by a small group of children.
A week today will be our visit to the HMS Victory. Thank you for all the
offers to help. Your child's teacher will be contacting you shortly if she
needs you to help. Please remember that the children need to be at school
by 8.15 am on Friday 30th January as we will tie unable to wait for any
latecomers due to the tight schedule at Portsmouth. Please remember that
the children need to wear school uniform. We would also suggest the children
dress up warmly with a winter coat, hats and gloves. The sun doesn't always
shine at the seaside especially in January! Children require a backpack to
hold their lunch and drink so that their hands are free when they walk around
the decks of HMS Victory. Packed lunch should be in a named disposable bag
and drinks are better in a plastic bottle rather than carton as they can be
screwed up again. No flasks though, as they have to be carried even when
empty.
Next week the children will be learning about axles and wheels by making
their own cannon. For this we need lots of cardboard boxes. The best size is
something like water biscuits would come in but failing that a cereal box will
do. These will be needed at the latest by Thursday, the day before our visit
to Portsmouth.
Other work next week is also linked to our history topic. The children will
be learning how to organise information for example by writing their own
booklet on "How to be a Sailor"
Thank you for your support. The Year Two Team.
Homework Challenge
What things can you find at home that have wheels. How are they fixed to
the object that they are moving?
Can you draw them?
