CHRISTMAS CRAFT DAY

Friday 28th November 2008

Don't forget to book this date in your diary. We all have lots of fun helping the children with their craft.

Eco Committee      GENERATION GREEN
We now have 9,587 leaves and have reached 35% of our total.
Grown ups please complete the Energy Savers Report and donate the leaves to our school. It only takes 5 minutes and it is quite interesting. The web site address is: www.generationgreen.co.uk
Thank you Mrs Taylor and the Eco Club

CHRISTMAS FAIR
The Christmas Fair will soon be upon us.
It was great to see so many people at the HOPA meeting last night but please don't forget that we need lots and lots of people to help before and on the day.

DON'T FORGET
Next Friday is the first mufti day. The children can come into school in their own clothes. (Please remember that they will be going outside to play during the day and therefore need warm clothes and coats.) Every child is asked to bring a donation eg filled jam jars / books / toys / games or £1 (so that HOPA can purchase prizes for the Fair).
Thank You.

WOKING DIWALI PARADE
Thank you to everyone who took part in the Diwali parade on Friday night. Our lanterns stood the test of time and our legs the long walk.
The parade consisted not only of children with lanterns but companies and societies in Woking who had made some amazing huge lanterns. We were accompanied by a band and dancers. The highlight of the evening was our stop at the Fire Station for hot drinks and balloons.

PE Kits - Reminder
A large number of children did not have their PE kits this week. Please can you make sure that every child brings in their PE kit on a Monday.

Year 2
Our work this week has been both exciting and challenging. Our maths work has been all about multiplication. We have learnt this can be called lots of different things such as lots of, arrays or repeated addition. The children should be able to tell you lots more! We are all getting good at multiplication tables but extra practise at home would be very valuable. Start with 2's and 10's and progress onto 5's,3's and 4's when your child is really confident. Next week we will be continuing with this work so practise makes perfect.
Literacy has been linked to our History topic about Florence Nightingale The children are working towards making non-fiction leaflets about this historical character. This week they have been learning about the layout of non-fiction texts with headings, sub-headings, pictures and captions. Next week they will make a finished article after travelling back in time to meet Florence. It should be exciting.
The children have now been put into groups for Maths and Literacy and may be working in any of the three year two classes during this time. Maths groups are Sapphire, Emerald and Chrystal and Literacy groups are Saturn, Callisto and Earth.
Thank you for your continued support

The Year Two Team

Maths Challenge
Can your child sort through their socks. How many lots of 2? How many altogether? Could they compare it with their brother or sisters socks or maybe yours?

Reception

Please remind your child to bring in something for the
sound table.
Yellow Hat (what we liked this week)

We enjoyed our rhyming stories and making up our own rhymes.
Outdoors, we loved making fireworks in the firework factory and acting out the story of Guy Fawkes and the 'Gun Powder Plot'.
In maths, we learnt to sort 2D shapes and to write the number four.
We explored different ways to change clay by twisting, cutting, stretching, rolling, flattening and dissolving it in water.
Help from you
Please could you help your child to find rough objects for our Science Investigation Table. We are also collecting boxes and cylinders (e.g. kitchen rolls) again for the children to make models of buildings and vehicles.
Homework Challenge
Talk about family celebrations.
Thank you very much for all your support
Year R team

Year 1
This week in literacy we have continued to write recounts - we have all enjoyed sharing the funny stories of our past! Next week we will be producing information sheets about old toys.
Our maths lessons this week have been full of doubling numbers and next week we shall be working with number lines using them to help us to add and subtract and work out "robber" sums.
Our topic day on Friday saw us finding out how museums arrange and label their exhibits. Then we used this knowledge to order some toys and write informative labels for them. In PE we are continuing to create a dance about magic toys. For our ICT work next week we will be looking for information to cut out and collect. So we would be very grateful for any unwanted catalogues and magazines.
Help Needed!
Christmas craft day is fast approaching! (28th December) If there is anyone who can help with preparation in school on Friday 21st or who could take home - please let your child's teacher know! We would also appreciate any old unwanted CDs to turn into snowflakes!
Homework Challenge
Can you find out some information about old toys such as how old they are, what they are made from etc. - maybe from a book, from the internet or by asking someone?
