CHRISTMAS CRAFT DAY Friday 28th November 2008

Come and join us on this wonderful day in school. For one day only we will be making Christmas Craft items. We need enthusiastic people to help with groups of children. You do not need to be artistic just enthusiastic.

Last year a number of our working parents booked this day as holiday from work and joined us and really enjoyed being involved with the school for the day.

If you can come in for only a morning or afternoon we would also be grateful. There will be more details nearer the time.

Please note that Hedgehog, Squirrel and Robin classes only need help in the morning. Thank you

CHRISTMAS FAIR

The Christmas Fair is nearly upon us once again. Lots of exciting stalls are being planned for children and families.

Please come along next Thursday 13th November to the next HOPA meeting and offer your support.

At the Link Parent Meeting this week the stalls for each class were drawn out of a hat.

As you know every family are expected to support their class either at the Christmas Fair or the Summer Fair. Link Parents will be asking for help to set up, clear away and man the stall on the day. This is a commitment of at least 15 minutes but obviously we are hoping that some people will give more of their time. Without your support our children can not enjoy these two brilliant events and benefit from the funds raised. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

Spare Clothes

Do you have any spare polo shirts, boy's trousers, girl's trousers and tights that we can have? Please have a look this week and send them into school. Thanks.

The Oaktree School Bag

This year we decided to make a handy carry bag to keep in keep up our Eco ethos displaying each child's drawing of themselves . Each year group have their own bag.

We have the kept the cost of the bag to £5 which means we are making only a very small amount for the school. The more bags we can sell the cheaper we will buy the bags and therefore make a little more.

Please think about buying a bag not only for yourselves but also for relatives for Christmas .

To enable you to see an example of the bag we will put one out on display outside the Eco Lobby every morning and under the covered roof area in Reception at lunch time and home time.

Due to the cost of the bag we will only be able to order the bags that are ordered. If we order extra bags and they do not sell then we will make a loss. Please find another order slip at the end of this Newsletter.

Just Trombones

The children in Years 1 and 2 enjoyed listening to Just Trombones this week. See the Year 2 section of the Newsletter for more details.

Year 1

In literacy this week we have been using "time movers". First we thought about what we had been doing in the half term. Next we told our talk partner. After that we wrote about what we had done. Finally we tried to add some "juicy" descriptive words.

In maths we have been making "sensible" guesses as to how many bricks, pencils, counters etc. there are. We have then been counting to see how good our guesses were.

We have also been thinking about what makes a good friend and how we can be a good friend ourselves. Thank you for sending in the children's favourite toys as well as some of your old favourites. Today we looked at them and what they are made from and compared them to some old toys. We also looked at some very old toys from Chertsey Museum.

Next week we will be writing about an event from our own childhood, such as a funny story or a favourite memory. In maths we will be doubling numbers and in PE we are continuing our dance about old toys.

HOMEWORK CHALLENGE

It would be wonderful if the children could recount to their talk partner a funny story that happened to their parent or grandparent when they were little (so we can practise using the past tense!).

Year 2

We were very lucky to have a special visit from 'Just Trombones'. The duo came into school to talk to us about their exciting instruments. We really enjoyed listening to them play their trombones, especially the Pink Panther tune. We found out that if a small trombone is stretched out then its tubes measure 2 and a half metres long! We found this particularly interesting because in Maths this week we have been measuring. We have learnt that there are 100crr in a metre and have got very good at deciding if an object is greater than or less than a metre.

We decided in Year 2 that we love fireworks and bonfire night and wrote some exciting rhyming poems to celebrate.

Watch the rockets zooming through the sky. Flying higher and higher.

Scattering sparks of gold as it zooms through the sky. Listen to the bonfire crackle and hiss. It is something you would not want to miss!

Homework

Next week is Road Safety Week. Please encourage your children to practise the Green Cross Code when out and about at the weekend.

THE GREEN CROSS CODE

1. Think first

Find the safest place to cross, then stop

2. Stop

3. Use your eyes and ears

Look all around for traffic and listen

4. Wait until it's safe to cross

If traffic is coming, let it pass

5. Look and Listen

When it is safe, walk straight across the road. Always walk across, never run.

6. Arrive Alive

Keep looking and listening for traffic while you cross.

Thank you if you offered your help with our key words. We will be in contact next week to arrange for training.
